Dingleton Boiler House

Womersley also made alterations to the interior of the nearby hospital that this boiler house once served. The hospital was converted into apartments in 2004 and the interiors lost. Nonetheless, the boiler house survived and is Category B listed and thus protected. Its starkly distinctive and sculptural form has a commanding presence and punctuates its context by way of precise angularity - it corners and faces well. The relief of the walls and pyrimidal concrete forms responded to the functional demands but were also carefully composed. In 1978 it won a Commendation from the Financial Times Architecture Awards and was recognised for the quality of its pre-cast construction. The use of concrete characterised Womersley's later work.
